My new rule is to only bother if the film is surprisingly good or surprisingly bad when it’s supposed to be good or just interesting, the latter with Aniara, a Swedish Science-Fiction space movie. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition and no one expects a Swedish space movie! ===The Plot=== The future and Earth has been ravaged by global warming and is going through a managed evacuation to Mars. The trip is very commercial as passengers are shuttled up to giant space cruise ships with shopping malls, swimming pools, cinemas and all sorts to entertain on their three week journey. Emelie Garbers Mimaroben (Emelie Jonsson) joins the ‘Aniara’ fleet ship and will work her passage in the wellness department, a large room where passengers enter into a near hypnotic state of karma and transported back to an Earth simulation to experience the tranquil non global warming years. Her ex, Isolgel (Bianca CruzeiroIsagel), is also on board and working her passage as a First Officer. Not long into the journey the ship is knocked of course by a micro meteor impact near the reactor, forcing the ship to dump its fuel to avoid a meltdown and total destruction. They are now on a new course into deep space. Captain Chefone (Arvin Kananian) inform the passengers of their very lucky escape but also the bad news that their three week trip will now take two years as they seek a celestial body to slingshot around to get them back on course, be that back to Earth.... or on to Mars. Emelie shares her cabin with old friend and astronomer Elga (Anneli Martini), who informs Emile the captain, is not telling the whole truth and they may not get to either any year soon. But the captain and his crew have to remain calm and keep that fact from the passengers and figure out how to keep everyone alive with what resources they have left. Surely help will come one day as the passengers begin to lose faith as they sink deeper and deeper into space, Emilie’s relaxation pod getting increasingly popular as the passengers and crew try to escape their foreboding reality. ===Results=== I quite enjoyed this and its ideas on how the modern Hawaiian shirt wearing consumerist society would cope if they were trapped on a cruise ship for eternity were quite somber. How quickly would they tire of the Mals, Zumba classes and squash courts, what their everyday life is at home, I guess. When confronted on the ship the everyday life is rather dull and predictable as the food and hope run down. Being a Swedish film they have to have two liberal chicks getting it on each other although not many black people on this ship , especially when Sweden is very multicultural these days due to the generous welfare system. Who knows, maybe they couldn’t afford the ticket up and away from Earth? I could imagine Ingmar Bergman doing this film if he was stilll around today. Its well acted and the slow desperation and loss of hope comes out well over the two hours from their performances as they have to survive on food made of algae everyday and drink their own recycled wee wee although I’m told that is normal in space flight. It’s just an above average interesting Science- Fiction worth checking out guys ===RATINGS=== Imdb.com – 6.1/10.0 (11,230 votes) Rottentomatos.com –71% critic’s approval Metacritic – 61% ===Trailer===
