Never Depend on Others

There are so many wisdoms that my biological parents bestowed upon us. One of them is to never depend on others. If you can do it, then do it without any hesitation. Before the pandemic, cutting the tie with all our relatives was deliberately carried out because of their evil deeds toward us. The implication is heavier on my father's side. Even as a kid, I had seen how badly they treated us. Since my siblings and I are orphaned for not having our biological parents, we have managed to stay together and help each other. We do not rely anymore on our supposed second parents as our relatives. Any wisdom of thoughts in mind? Image Credit: nativeplanet.com

That's a precious advice that your biological parents have given you. I got the same from my mother and I keep telling my daughters the same. We have to be self reliant and independent as much as possible.

I am glad that your parents are passing on a good principle about the real truth of life. Being resilient is a good thing because you do not need to rely on others.

@Shavkat My mom was a single parent as dad passed away very young. She stayed strong and independent throughout her life and she still is. That's how we got it from her. She would often say that to us.

@Shavkat Hmm.. Life is the greatest teacher. Isn't it? You might get knowledge from books and formal education. But then experiences in the life gives you the really wisdom. Our circumstances make us.

I understand what you are saying. However, there are trustworthy people in the world. You said you help your siblings. So, you can depend on them. It's only untrustworthy people, as your relatives have shown themselves to be, that are undependable. Know who you can depend on and who you can't. Don't give a blanket thought about not depending on anyone. It would make you a very lonely person. We all need people in our lives. When you know who you can trust, you know who you can depend on.

@just4him These days, it is really hard to find them. But I am sure there are still some people who can be trusted.

I do trust my siblings and can depend on them. Regardless, I am not generalizing the idea of asking for help from others if they can really be trusted.

@Shavkat Knowing who you can trust is half your battle. Asking is the other half.

That sounds like a very sad life you had to endure but good lessons you learned even if you had to learn them a hard way

This is a good advice and something I repeated every day to my niece. Be sure to be independent during all your life. You must never be obliged to be stuck in a situation because you have no choices.

My parents used to say this to us religiously. Now, I always think of possible solutions or resolutions without asking for help from others. I am also preventing myself from owing favors from others. There are some people who will keep on talking about it to others, which I hate the most. It was like the favor was forever.

@Shavkat - I prefer to help people than to ask for help. I want to be independent.

@LadyDuck It is also my nature to help others. I never expect any returns.

Sometimes we depend on others even if we don't want it.

This is what my parents taught me. But through out life, sometimes I had to trust a person.

Indeed. We need to trust someone. If we are lucky to have them, there is nothing to worry about asking help from them.

You said it right. My mom is like this. I had seen how she managed family problems without asking for help from others.

Yes, being independent means freedom. That said, we do need help from others in some circumstances.
