A Boastful Researcher Without Substance

My first student turned my day upside-down today. He seemed overconfident during the class and assumed to be an all-knowing soul. But when he asked simple questions about his lesson, he did not have the wisdom to answer them. Despite being a renowned researcher in his country, I wondered why he could not impart his knowledgeable opinions with these simple questions. He portrayed himself as having an empty head. Thus, he does not have substance. Have you met such a person? Image Credit: i1.sndcdn.com

Sometimes people draw blanks when they are put on the spot. It doesn't mean they aren't intelegent or anything.

He might be intelligent. I assumed that language barrier took place when having the class with me. Thus, he needs to improve his English skills. In this way, he can able to answer simple questions. Maybe he is also having memory lapse to convey his answers.

@Shavkat Those could be factors, too. You don't always know what someone else is going through.

@kaylachan I guess you are right. I just brushed off the wrong notion, but I was really buffled at that time.

I am sorry you had to deal with that. Yes I have..I have met many with numerous degrees to their credit, but not one ounce of common sense or human understanding or empathy.

Some of my evil relatives are like this. They lack of common sense and continue to hurt others with trivial things.

He tamed a bit when I gave him his performance after this class. It is a good thing that I noted some of his flaws while having a class with him.

There are people who pretend to be an allknowing, but when they speak you notice that they finally know very little.

That is the problem for some people. They tend to portray such a character that cannot be justified by them.

@LadyDuck During my school days, I had been with them. However, I just kept quiet and did my personal business, especially during the preparation of our licensure examination. The result of the exams speaks for itself. Most of them failed, and they never dared to retake them.

@Shavkat - I agree, there are some that, no matter what you say, they pretend to know more!

@Shavkat My younger son sometimes behaves like that to have his way and I have to be tough with him or just snob him.

You are right. I had noticed this one with our top student in class at university before. She knows all the principles and information from our books. However, she lacks practical applications.

It is inevitable to meet these people. The only thing we can do is deal with them.

There are people who are doing well academically but do not have common sense. We have quite a number of cases that professors were being scammed and lost a lot of money.

That is something to ponder. I must agree that some professionals cannot show their knowledgeable judgment when it comes to incorporating their competence in the real world.

Many, we call them empty metal tins - they make too much noise and do not have anything inside them. Sorry this one came on your path.

I totally agree with you. They do talk so much, but they have never had any results. It is okay to handle this kind of student. I must admit that he is full of himself.
