Washing Dishes by hand.

Yesterday I came across an interesting You Tube video where someone was following a housecleaning routine from the 1920s. Being a younger person, she hadn't really done dishes by hand before, having mostly used a dishwasher, and was a little confused by the instructions to do things in a particular order. The order given was silverware, glassware, plates and then pots and pans. Now, I was always taught glassware before silverware because you don't want any grease in the water getting on the glassware. One of the reasons for doing dishes this way is because the least dirty things are washed first and also glassware and silverware comes into direct contact with your mouth, so you really want them to be clean. The truth is that if you are doing dishes by hand you'll probably end up changing the water once or twice anyway. I think it's a sign of my age because my first reaction was "surely everyone knows this"? But then I realised that some people have possibly never washed dishes by hand.

I get these reactions frequently. There was an article in a newspaper recently as to how often you should was sheets, because apparently people don't know these things. Odd. I wash glassware and plastics separately from the rest. I also rinse everything with clean water after washing.

@KarenAnne Airing the bed is important to let the moisture from your body escape.

I'm always bewildered by those "organiser" articles who tell you to make the bed as soon as you get up. I always air the bed when I get up. I might be so slovenly as to not make it until bedtime but airing it is more important to me.

I wash dishes by hand and l don't pay much attention to what is washed first , because the water is continuously running from the pipe into the sink while l am washing.

I'm sure you're right, younger people have seldom washed dishes by hand. I wish now I had made my children do more chores, but I did make them wash dishes. Someone one time said, "Why don't you buy a dishwasher?" I said, "Why? I have two of them."

I always wash glasses first as well. We have a dishwasher but it only gets used maybe a couple of times a year. I much prefer washing things by hand, I actually quite enjoy doing it with some good music. And when things come out of the dishwasher they sometimes need re-washing anyway (and they have an unpleasant chemically smell).

I always preferred to wash dishes by hand. I always felt they were cleaner than in the dishwasher. Have a good weekend.
