Disease X--Just What We Need Right Now

This term was first coined in 2018 by WHO, the World Health Organization, and means that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease. A list was formed in 2022 of 25 virus families and bacteria and a list was formed by 300 scientists. These need to be further researched. After a meeting of a panel of healthcare experts met this last Wednesday(during the World Economic Forum's 2024 annual meeting) they are sounding the alarm that there is a need to be prepared for the hypothetical emergence of a deadly new pathogen--Disease X. This one could be 20 times deadlier than COVID-19. (COVID-19 could be considered the first Disease X.) Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the John Hopkins Center for Health Security, says Disease X may be a respiratory virus and could already be in circulation among animals. Only a matter of time until it transfers to humans. It could come by way of bats, birds, or swine. They are saying that some countries are not spending enough on preparing their health systems for the next time around. Test drugs, research and development, managing patient surges in hospitals, and contract tracing are all things that need to be stronger. Spending smarter is important too. Some countries only spend about 3% of their health budgets on prevention.

You know what I am not even going to honor this finding with one degree of anxiety. As far as I am concerned I will do the best for myself and my cats and if anything fells me I am prepared to meet the Lord and my loved ones, It will just mean the hard fight is finally over and I get rewarded. I cannot afford to even dwell on this.

I very much agree. I believe if something is meant to be it will be regardless of anything I do.

@celticeagle - I agree, if it's our time to go there is nothing we can do.

I read about this. I truly believe that COVID was just a preview of what can happen in the world. I think the next pandemic will be much worse. Have a good weekend.

I'd rather know than be blind to what could happen.

That's why I don't want to have children. Nowadays, in our city, many children are sick in the pediatric department of hospitals.Children are being tested by viruses and flu

That really sounds scary. So many around here wouldn’t ever put a mask back on their face or stay out of public when sick. My husband was awful about coronavirus. He had really nasty views and didn’t care who got sick or who he got sick. I would dread if something worse comes around. He was handling raw meat and eggs tonight and rinsed him hands with just water, dried them on a hand towel that he put over the clean dishes and then went about touching everything. Sometimes I cannot stand living with someone who is so unsanitary.

Your husband doesn't sound like a very nice person. Being unsanitary in normal circumstances is not good.

Whenever I think of so-called "world-leaders" all I see in my mind's eye are these swamp creatures laying just beneath a layer of slime with all these Medusa like arms and fingers grabbling for as much money and resources as they can get, all the while telling themselves that the rest of humanity do not know what do with all of it anyway, so it is better they take it all. As for the "scientists" - children in a candy store. If only the consequences of what these people are doing were not so dire, one could almost forgive their aberrant behaviour. X has long been touted and probably has already been created in a lab near you, viz the Chinese publication earlier this week about the new respiratory virus they managed to cobble together, again, sigh. I was never concerned about the previous one and I'm not going to worry about this either. I'm just waiting to see where the money goes.

Interesting ideas. I am very thankful for these knowledgeable scientists.
