Another Football Legend Departed

His name might not be as famous as other Italian legends like Paolo Rossi, Dino Zoff or Francesco Totti, but Gigi Riva is the all-time top scorer in Italian national team to date. What was even more surprising from him was that he never played for the big clubs. Riva spent most of his career in the minnow, Cagliari, currently at the relegation zone. He managed to help them win Italian top flight in 1970, the same year he brought Italy to World Cup final before losing to Pele's Brasil.

I’m not aware of the person you are speaking of, but I hate to hear of legends leaving us. Their contributions are hopefully recognized, and never forgotten.

@wardfcsc Football, basketball, and baseball, not to mention Olympic sports. Although, I have gotten more curious about soccer since Messi came to the MLS.

@AmbiePam Yes, Messi's effect in MLS is huge because he is officially still the best one in the world this year after he won the annual FIFA Best Award. USA will be busy this year for a big event in the summer, Copa America and of course in 2026 for FIFA World Cup.

@wardfcsc Not really but sometimes I might like to watch a bit of American baseball game. I have attended a football game in England. Manchester United vs Oxford United many years ago. I also went to a Cricket match in Wales.

I am Italian, Gigi Riva was as famous as Paolo Rossi, but in a more ancient time, he was called "Rombo di Tuono".

Ah, thank you for the correction, Ms.Anna. I suppose perhaps because he was unlucky not to win the world cup, but I could be mistaken too. Feel free to give more reference, I shall appreciate it. So, what does it mean by 'Rombo di Tuono'?

@wardfcsc Rombo di Tuono means Roar of Thunder. The nickname was given by a sport journalist because of his dominant performance. He played from 1964 until 1974.

@LadyDuck I see, I can imagine that, watching how he played in 1970 World Cup clips. How about you, Ms.Anna? do you like football too? any favourite player?
