Day 9 – Promise Keeper Genesis 9:1 So God (Elohiym) blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the dread of you will be on every beast of the earth, every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. 3 Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. I have given you everything, even as the green herbs. 4 But you will not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. 5 Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast, I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man. 6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood will be shed; for in the image of God He made man. 7 As for you, be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.” 8 Then God (Elohiym) spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “As for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature with you; the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of everything that went out of the ark, every beast of the earth. 11 Thus I establish My covenant with you; never again will all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God (Elohiym) said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature with you, for perpetual generations. 13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it will be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It will be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, the rainbow will be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters will never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow will be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God (Elohiym) and every living creature on the earth.” 17 Then God (Elohiym) said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” God’s name: Elohiym – Mighty God Yeshuwa - Messiah God’s character: Mercy, Promise Keeper, Executioner People make contracts every day for various reasons: the purchase of a home, car, education, marriage, whatever people agree about, they make a contract. God (Elohiym) made a contract with Noah and everyone who would come after him, never to flood the earth again. As a sign of the covenant, God (Elohiym) placed the rainbow in the cloud to remind Him of His promise never to flood the earth again to destroy every living thing on it. God (Elohiym) has kept His promise. The rainbow is a beautiful reminder of God’s (Elohiym’s) promise to mankind. People admire and take pictures of rainbows when they see them. It brings smiles to people’s faces. Sadly, most people don’t know what the rainbow means, and as with everything else good from God (Elohiym), Satan corrupted it so man wouldn’t know God (Elohiym) as their Promise Keeper. Many Christians don’t know what the rainbow means. They only know the story of the flood, how God saved Noah, his family, and the animals in the ark. They know the rainbow is the result of the flood, but they don’t know why the rainbow is important. I didn’t either until I started studying the Bible. When you see the destructive force of nature, and how much life is lost because of natural disasters, look for the rainbow, and know, God (Elohiym) will keep His promise not to destroy the earth. There will be loss of life, but not every life. God (Elohiym) is your Promise Keeper. At the same time, God (Elohiym) gave mankind the rainbow, He also gave Noah meat to eat, not only plants and herbs. In giving him meat, God (Elohiym) told him He would punish every animal and person who took man’s life without cause because He created man in His image. God (Elohiym) set in motion the death sentence for murder. God (Elohiym) made it a point of law when He gave Moses the law on Mt. Sinai. Exodus 21:12 “He who strikes a man so that he dies will surely be put to death. 13 However, if he did not lie in wait, but God (Elohiym) delivered him into his hand, then I will appoint for you a place where he may flee. 14 But if a man acts with premeditation against his neighbor, to kill him by treachery, you will take him from My altar, that he may die. 15 He who strikes his father, or his mother will surely be put to death.” God (Elohiym) does not tolerate premeditated murder. However, man tolerates it. In many places you will not find a death sentence for murder, but time in prison. Depending on the crime, the person could face life in prison or a few years for killing another person. Why does man tolerate what God (Elohiym) does not? God’s (Elohiym’s) law is clear. Satan saw to it that God (Elohiym) has been taken out of the law, and His laws no longer apply. Not only does God (Elohiym) remember His promise regarding natural disasters with the rainbow, but He also remembers His law and will bring about the death of the person guilty of murder by His hand. You can think to yourself, “Yes! God (Elohiym) will bring vengeance on those who committed any crime, especially that of murder, but He will also bring His judgment against you. You might not kill another person, but even your thoughts can get you in trouble. Remember what Jesus (Yeshuwa) said in the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:21 “You have heard it was said to those of old, ‘You will not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ (vain fellow) will be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and remember your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and thrown into prison. 26 Assuredly, I say to you, you will by no means get out of there till you have paid the last penny.” So then, God (Elohiym) holds you accountable for everything you do and think. You have only one recourse to escape God’s (Elohiym’s) judgment: confess your sin with a sincere heart and God (Elohiym) will forgive you. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV) God (Elohiym) is faithful to forgive. His mercy toward us is limitless. God (Elohiym) even forgives murder when you repent and give your life into His hands. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for being my Promise Keeper. Thank you for Your mercy toward me when I sin and confess my sin to You. Keep my thoughts and actions from bringing Your judgment on me. When I sin, forgive me. When I see the rainbow, let me remember Your great mercy to mankind. In Jesus’ (Yeshuwa’s) name, I pray. Amen.
