Cynophobia is the fear of dogs.. When you have this fear you do not even want to go near any dog. I do not like small dogs because they will bite you where a big dog will not.
You will not go to a friend's house if they have a dog. You are even scared to go for a walk. You might see a dog and that will scare you.
Guard dogs are really scary when they come charging at you. so I can see why you would be scared of a dog.

I personally grew up with both, even though I favor cats. I saw nothing but dogs at Pet Smart today, so someone afraid of dogs would've hated going there.

@jstory07 Small happy dogs are the worst. I’ve had a number of really big dogs but I’d never have another dog - I don’t pick up poop for anyone now that my kids are toilet trained. When I go for a walk in the forest where dog lovers like to let their dogs off the leash I take a walking stick, not as an aid to walking but as an anti dog poking device.

I love all dogs. I have a bad habit of wanting to pet every one I see. We had two small dogs; and they weren't biters. Have a good day and a good new week.

I did animal rescue work volunteering for at least 20 years. Mostly dogs, but there were also a lot of cats and kittens, and the occasional tame bird or two..and a few bunnies. I was only injured twice. Once, a feral cat leaped on one arm and dug in her claws and would NOT let go. She dug those claws in so deep, yowling and hissing...it hurt like FIRE! The other lady I was with finally got the claws loose, she put a cloth over the cat's head so it wouldn't bite her or me. Then I had to go to the hospital, and yes, had to get those rabies shots. It wasn't fun at all.
The other was a young pit bull. He seemed very docile and tame. I petted and loved on him, he had a collar on, so as per procedure, I snapped the leash on his collar. He turned into a wild dog and sank his teeth in to my other arm. Good thing, as the cat injury was just barely healed. However he did have a rabies tag that was current, so I did not have to get more rabies shots. But he tore the skin and I had some stitches. It has made me extremely leary of pit bulls, and I don't mean I hate them, but OH, those jaws are so strong! If I ever help rescue any more pit bulls, they will have to be little puppies! But, I dearly love dogs.

When that pit bull bit me, it bit through a heavy flannel shirt like it was a paper sack! I put it on in case the dog was wiggly. No wiggles. Just big bites!

I used to have a recurring dream of a giant great dane leaping over the backyard fences from 3 houses down...
Then there was the time my sister and I were surrounded by a pack of snarling dogs on our way to church one Sunday. Luckily a car came by and the driver honked at them and scared them away.

I'm a cat person. This phobia is sad. If dogs were treated right and trained right there wouldn't be such an issue.

@jstory07 .......I never get close to a strange dog. I talk to it and put my hand out. Then I wait and go by their response.

Your post reminds me of an incident that happened to us. All of us were coming out of Lowe's hardware- Rufus on my left side per usual. Everybody calm and walking like a team. A lady entered the store and totally went into freak out mode. Total freak out. She hugged the wall. She muttered something about "attack." Rufus was calm. He listened to me, walking quietly on my side as he knows to do. The woman continued gibbering as we headed out. I guess his muscled 35 pounds was too much for her. I mean it when I say he was NOT leaping around and he was NOT posing a threat to anyone. The woman had issues before she saw us.

@jstory07 Lowes and Home Depot are known for allowing dogs in. I guess the lady didn't realize she'd encounter one so soon. Not that Rufus was near her. Often, when we walk together downtown, when somebody walks toward us, I put him on 'sit.' We are on the side, he sits, watches and everybody does well. Unless the walker wants to talk with Rufus. Then he often is jumpy in his eagerness to be friendly. I continue to try to work on his friendly greetings.

I do not blame you or anyone else who has fear of dogs since when I found out that dogs are related of wolves, it made me figure out why dogs bite humans from time to time.

@jstory07 That is true since the dogs breeds that I am afraid of are Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers.

I do not fear dogs. I love dogs and cats and love to talk to the dogs I meet. I have talked to dogs and some have listened and some have barked at me and there have been some that come up to me and know I like them. Since I had a labrador-huskty I would only have a dog from the lab family and the husky family. I loved my dog I had so much and she was my best friend. I loved to take her places with me. I do not like the small dogs that bark and bite. They make lots of noise.

Hey, I am sad why are you afraid of dogs. Dogs are family too and they are the most loyal and loving creature. The violent ones are those who experienced abuse and unloved.

I have that fear. I have a neighbor who I no longer can visit because she has a doberman and a new dog that looks like a doberman mix. I don't understand the appeal some people have to want dogs like that. They are house dogs and the constant cleaning, it is something I will never understand.

I have never been scared of dogs. Always a cat person but had dogs as neighbors back when I lived in Latvia. Our neighbor's dog was a sweet Rottweiler who was friends with our cat Sid. He stood by his fence and also guarded our garden,
