When to give up?

As one ages it becomes necessary to wish goodbye to some of the ways that were embraced while young. The question is when is the cut-off time Does one wait to become invalid and then decide to give up the kind of food one eats for example? Not just the food even the kind of clothes we wear, the stuff we read, the movies we watch, the outings we plan and more All this has to change. What do you think? What is it that you do not do anymore that you did in your younger days?

I have given up trying to maintain relationships that aren’t the best for me. Sometimes a person hangs on to a relationship too long because they remember the good times, and hold out hope the situation can be repaired. However, while I always try to work things out, I no longer try to hold on to people who are a negative influence in my life. I don’t need to be weighed down by drama.

This is something I have been wondering. Specifically for me, when younger I was a keen SCUBA diver. It was a huge part of my life for 20 years! I finally gave it up when Little One was two, it was just too difficult and time-consuming and not family-friendly. I sold all my equipment and promised myself that I would start again in due course. Now time has passed and I'm wondering when should I go back, or even should I go back at all? Or should I encourage the girls to try and we could all go together?

You have brought up a valid reason to give up whatever that is not because you were ill but because something more important came up. You now have a choice to give it a try again but you may be in for a shock in that scuba diving may not be right for you at the age that you are in at the moment.

@allknowing I know I gave up for other reasons, but then you start to wonder if it is sensible to start again.

With physical things your body tells you it's time to move on especially if you suffer a significant injury. Other items like movies, books, travel may depend on your interests changing as you age. I have given up on many sports I enjoyed. At a certain age, one can no longer effectively or physically do them. Hitting a baseball, playing and even throwing a football, or shooting a basketball are things I did frequently when younger that I cannot do either because of physical limitations.

Yours is a typical case of age coming in the way But there are a few who still continue with their activity despite age She was eighty at that time

@allknowing OMG!!! Now that's inspiration for you. Your only as old as you feel. At least for that wonderful granny. I do still hit a tennis ball around for fun and have taken up pickleball. So, I've not given up yet.

I think you need to relinquish things on your own terms, as you are ready, but before your are forced to by becoming decrepit.

Age does not slow me down, I eat, drink, and enjoy what I like, I still enjoy the movies I did long ago, I wear what ever I like and I do not think about adjusting my life to accommodate my age,

Like all humans, I have gone through my phases. I rode a bicycle and rode a horse when I was young. I hiked mountain trails. I can't do those wonderful things any more. I have learned to walk with a cane- my cane has a dragon's head so it helps me to not feel quite so ancient. I am grateful that I can get up, stand, and walk. I am grateful that I still can drive a car though I can't and won't drive a car in heavy highway traffic.

Age does come in the way and in your case I see it is a bit unkind to you having to use a cane for support I like your positive attitude when you say you can still drive

@allknowing One of my sisters has had her car keys taken away due to dementia coming on. She is really angry that her daughter took those keys but daughter and Doctor thought it best.

I don't think that I have given up on anything as such. But yes, I would not go out of the way to make an impression or please someone as I did when I was young. Maybe that's the wisdom I have got that it's nit worth it.

never gave up, instead you may change your style, way of doing things may be. i think i change the way i used to use social media, i was so obsessed, posting everything online, and then with passage of time i realized that i should keep my privacy and avoid putting everything online.. So now, i do not usually post, but follows people to stay updated with what's happening round the world.
