Don't short change your animals on intelligence...

I get so tired of people who say animals are stupid. Animals save lives, fetch items that their owners need, rescue drowning people and so much more. I just got an example of how smart my cats are. I had gone to the bathroom and just came back and sat down when my cell phone rang. I checked the caller ID and it was from the local hospital. HUMMMM, that's kind of strange, I wonder if one of my neighbors is ill and in the hospital? I had just missed the call so I hit redial and lucked out and got the same person that had called me. She wanted to know if "I" was having a problem and why did I just call her. She heard the TV in the background and what she thought was "The Lone Ranger" on the set. I confirmed that the program was on my set and my recent calls showed that the hospital had been called...but I didn't do it. She then said that she thought she heard a cat meow. I managed to keep from laughing and said that I have a Siamese cat that is on the table beside me, and maybe she dialed the hospital; but I don't have it on auto dial. We spoke for a couple of minutes, and I assured her that I was fine. We both figured out at the same time that somehow the cat had figured out the number for the hospital and dialed it as she was settling down on the table. She has a cat that does the same kind of thing on her phone. She also gets some mighty strange return calls from people she doesn't know. So, when you hear the poem about fog coming in softly on little kitten feet...if kitten or cat feet are soft, then elephants are ballet dancers!!!

I picked up the phone to use it and Freya had dialed the hospital number again!!!! I've had to stash the phone in a drawer. Fortunately it's the front desk rather than the emergency room, boy we both would have been in DEEP trouble!!!!

I have noticed that cats are very smart animals like my cat Burt who when he wants to go outside for a walk, he will walk toward the front door and meow to get my attention.

@BearArtistLady I know what you mean about the behavior of cats being smarter than they look.

I saw on a video about smart cats that there is one who opens the front door and lets himself into the house. It's quite a reach, but the cat handles it quite well. One of the cats that I feed jumps up on the carport roof, runs across the roof to avoid the wet grass, jumps down on the brick retaining wall, sits there and eats and follows the same route back to where she came from. In my book that takes some thinking, along with if I don't have the food out in time she will sit outside "MY" window and meow until she hears my door open and close and I come down with their food. She has figured out who is doing the feeding, when I do the feeding, and how to get me motivated. She also will do the yelling outside my window and if it's too hot she will wait in the carport for me to come down with the food. No thinking on that cat's part!!!

Animals are not stupid. They just don't see things like humans do. So now cats can make calls? How interesting.

@celticeagle The newer smart phones have touch screens (in Petey's case it's "butt touch screens". I have a love hate relationship with the screen, but it is nice not having to try to hit buttons that are sticking up. I like the touch screen on my tablet. It's really nice on both of them that I have in the bedroom. One is my reader (kindle book reader tablet) and the other is my computer that I take with me at times.

I have a touch screen cell phone. It's incredible what they can manage to do when they walk across it or sit on it. I have gotten in the habit of putting it in the end table drawer beside me, next to the TV remote.

Your siamese looks so much like Tuffy. And when my boy is running around the house it's like listening to something that's stomping, he's anything but light footed and boy does it hurt when he's clowning around with Roscoe in the middle of the night and treads on me it wakes me up cuz it actually hurts. He's about 13 1/2 pounds

Let's hope she (the cat) will dial the hospital if you really do need help one day!

I think she will, or she will alert the neighbors to the fact that I need help. She has a regular fan club that comes by her window each day to say "Hello" and they also check on me.

It could be that your darling cat was just experimenting just in case it was necessary to daily the number, Now she knows that it can be done and I believe that cats understand everything fully so if you should need assistance she will know just what to do. I was feeling a bit poorly today. Our weather has been shifting form cold to warm and so on, Today the wind has been really strong. So in the afternoon I lay down a bit just to relax and see how I was feeling. I had two furballs glues to my side because they knew mama needed some comforting especially if she was not feeling too good
