Mysophobia is the fear of germs and dirt. When you have this phobia you wash your hands all the time so you do not get germs or get your hand dirty. You stay far away from anything or any place that will expose you to germs or dirt. If someone is sick you back up from them and do not get any where near them. You do not want to get their germs.

I think my daughter-in-law has this condition. Everything you say fits her to a T.

I think folks should be clean and wash their hands off and on throughout the day but, there are always those who are too extreme.

It is a good thing that I am not like this. Some people developed this behaviour during the pandemic.

My husband has this condition, I had to scold him this morning and apply a hand cream to his very dry hands.

Washing your hands a lot does make them dry.

I think some of us have certain germ phobias but not full blown, all out freak-outs. I have my areas that freak me out if they aren't clean. One is the kitchen sink. I want it to be emptied after a meal, cleaned, etc. I always wipe down my stove when I am done with it. I want both my bathrooms to be clean--I want the sink and handles sanitized and the toilet clean. I spray and wipe down the shower after use. The rest of the house goes through spells of ''needing to vacuum'' or ''needing to dust'' --the dusting is never ending because I hate to dust. But I can guarantee if you stop by, the bathrooms will be clean, and the kitchen sink. Both my grandmothers were sticklers about sinks being clean and I guess they felt they had to pass it on to me!

My toilet is always clean and my sinks are always clean. My husband even cleans sinks when he uses them. I do not like dishes setting in a sink for very long.

@jstory07 I think that dishes in the sink are sort of like an unmade bed--the unmade bed makes the entire bedroom look messy. The dishes in the sink make the entire kitchen look messy, too. I just really hate dirty sinks! Glad I am not the only one.

@jstory07 That is a normal thing to do. Those who fear dirt would use gloves instead

My friend Juanita is a germaphobe and wouldn't come into the emerg with me the other day, but I don't think she washes her hands overly much.

At least this makes more sense than some of the other phobias. And it's a question of degree isn't it? I mean staying away from germs and washing your hands is really good health advice - until it becomes disabling.

My children say I'm a clean-freak. Well, not exactly is what I think I am. I just prefer washing my hands all the time. Having a large famiy, reasonable cleanliness is important. No harm in enjoying good health and safety, right?
