Birthday gifts

We are the fortunate position of having enough money for our needs, as long as we don’t live to 120. Yesterday, we sent both our sons a substantial monetary gift as they will make good use of it. My father helped us when we were struggling so we know what a difference a cash injection can make. It’s one son’s birthday in a few weeks. It’s hard to know what to buy him then there is the hassle and cost of postage so we usually pay the money straight into his account. This year, because we’ve just sent him funds, we told him his birthday present would still be money but a smaller amount, so he could have a few drinks for his birthday. Then Vince said ‘Maybe we’ll keep the money, and drink your health here. Which I thought was pretty funny but maybe you needed to be there. The photo is of the money I won at bingo on our cruise on the Queen Mary.

I am very sure that both of your sons will appreciate the flow of cash into their accounts, that is very generous of you.

@JudyEv Help, of any kind, makes us very grateful and inspires us to do the same when we are in a position to do so.

My father helped us such a lot. We didn't ask for help. I know we're talked about this before. It's nice to be able to do it for them.

They paid out in American money when you won at Bingo? Also, if you are set financially, and you're feeling so inclined, I would use a little cash infusion in my bank account as well.

Yes, they did!!! And it was great because anything we bought on board - drinks, etc - had to be paid for in US dollars at the end of the trip and, what with the exchange rate, most travellers lost out a little bit - but not us!

They will have plenty of uses for it and we have enough for our own needs.

@rebelann Wouldn't that be good? I think I'd dance on the table if that happened.

We've been very lucky. We've worked hard but can now see the 'rewards of our labour', as they say. It's nice to be able to do this for them. I'm sure we feel as good about it as they do.

The bingo pool had jackpotted over several weeks and I was lucky enough to win it. It was a sizeable amount.

Thanks. The bingo stash had jackpotted. I only played four times in about three weeks but I won the jackpot. It paid for all our out of pocket expenses.

@JudyEv It's more useful now, as you say. Later they may not need help but it might be a bit of a struggle to get there.

They will get our assets when we die but this is when they could most do with a bit of a hand. They'll just get a bit less at the end.

I can send my elder son on his birthday but not to my younger one as he stays in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen is a long way away. Have you been able to visit him there? Our younger son has lived in Ireland for about 20 years.

Money is the best gift when we are not sure about what they need. It's good that you are in a position to help. We also have enough though I worry about inflation.

We are getting to the stage where we can't travel much any more so we don't really need to have so much for ourselves.

It wasn't 'done' to give money once but it seems more acceptable now. I'm still a bit iffy about giving money as a wedding gift but I'm getting used to it!

@Ronrybs So many nowadays have lived together for however long and have most things they need. Some invitations even ask nicely for cash rather than gifts. There is usually provision to donate anonymously. That's the tricky part - trying to decide how much to give.

@JudyEv Yes, I remember those days of strange looks at handing over cash. Didn't realise it was becoming a wedding things, though

Money is also a good way of gifting but I think it should be accompanied by let's say an item that they would like and it can be kept for remembrance. But that is just my opinion

I understand what you're saying and I agree. We often buy a small gift as well and they have quite a few items that we've given them over the years.
