Caught an error during checkout

I bought celery yesterday. The cashier rung it up and it came out to $3.99. I told her it said $1.99. She voided that and asked another cashier for the code for celery. After entering that code the price changed. It actually became $1.79. Good thing I caught that. That’s a very big difference in price. The receipt said celery bunch in bag. Mine wasn’t actually pre-packaged but that’s what it said where I got the celery so that has to be it.

Wow, $3.99 for celery would be a lot to pay. I've been checking my receipts before I even leave the store. The computer pricing most stores have doesn't keep up with the posted price on the shelf tag, because the prices go up so fast. The company loads the ''new'' prices in the scanners, but the tags have to be updated or changed by hand. At least, I have been told by 2 stores now that this is the reason for so many pricing errors. Might be interesting to see if this problem existed when things were not all done by computers. There was something to be said for the old ways, at least they were accurate most of the time.

I never know if the correct price is the shelf price or the register price. Sometimes shelf price is cheaper than what it scans for and sometimes it’s the other way around. Usually stores will adjust for the shelf price if it’s lower than what the item scans for.

@MarieCoyle it’s crazy if you have to take a lot of pics of price tags. There were times I did that and after showing the cashier pic of the price tag they adjusted the price. But sometimes they still went to the aisle to check the price.

@lovebuglena I know, it is crazy but I do it for the produce part that is weighed out by the pound. That's where they seem to screw it up the most here.

It also sounds like it was on sale to get the lower price. Good job finding the error.

Some stores have a policy of not charging for something that rang up wrong. I guess your store doesn't do that.

Haven’t come across that ever happening. Maybe it depends on the store.

Good thing you pay attention. Most people would've paid the higer price and not given it a second thought.

Why overpay for no reason? It does become harder to look over the receipt and check for errors when you have bought a lot of things. Or when the cashier scans things super quick.

@lovebuglena Yeah, I know. Especially when we go to Aldi, it's like they are super charged or something.

@LadyDuck but usually if an item is on sale wouldn’t it show regular price and then sale prize?

I hate it when they start scanning items before you get to the cashier. You end up missing seeing the screen for the items they already scanned by the time you approach the person. It actually happened yesterday. Juice scanned not at the sale price. I only noticed that after we left the store as I wasn’t by the register when it was scanned. I went back to the store but couldn’t figure out on the shelf if that juice variety was actually on sale or not so didn’t bother going to cashier to ask. I should’ve though. It was a 60¢ difference.

Yep, we did. I already see some melted. Not sure if it's because of the salt on the road or because it's not as cold as it should be.
