Zen story: When is a message really a message, and not just a happenstance of our own mind?

Love can do nothing with a closed mind

The old Zen master, Wartrop Zerboscki, was in a large library, when suddenly on the other side of the room, a large book, fell off of the shelf there, and landed with a large thump onto the floor. The Zen master went over to the book, and picked it up. It was a book of 1001 Zen koans, written by some scholar, who had spent time digging them out from various Zen temples, that he had visited over many years. The Zen master, opened it up, and he read the following koan to himself. "If a book opens itself upon falling, at a certain page, does this mean anything, other than the randomity of the event?" The Zen master looked at his fallen book, which had not opened at any page, but which had landed unopened. The Zen master smiled to himself, while thinking to himself. "An unopened book tells us nothing, but at least a book, open at a certain page, if it encourages us to read what is on that page tells us at least something new, at that point in time." "So, meaning must always come from the action of an open mind; never can it come from the inaction of a closed mind." Happy with his meditative thinking, he then placed the book, back on its shelf. Anything of the mind remains happenstance, unless it is linked to the love, and its meaning, in the heart. An open mind allows this connection to take place. A closed mind never does. An open mind is a receptacle for whatever you see and hear. Not everything is good and healthy for the mind. Only when you open your mind to God's Word, reading and studying it, will you find everything you need, and love too, which is the very nature of God. Keep your mind closed to the world and what the world offers won't tempt you.

@innertalks It's the only way to have a good relationship with Jesus Christ. We need to close out the world and its lustful delights.

@just4him Yes, even to pray to God, Jesus advised us to go into our closets to pray, so as we are not distracted by the world then either, or praying for the wrong reasons, only wanting to be heard by others.

Yes, as the Bible tells us, there is a time for everything, and so there is a time for an open mind, and a time for a closed mind too. We need to close off our mind to worldly, and Satanic, temptations, but stay open to receiving the love of God, and the wisdom of his Holy Spirit in our lives too, through prayer, and study of scriptures.

Like a open book we should all have a open mind. Open mind about everything.

Yes, a closed mind always restricts us in some way. We need to be flexible, and open-minded, of mind. When we connect our mind with our heart, love always ensures that our mind always remains open then too. Cutting off this connection between our mind, and our heart, closes off our mind too.

The biggest reservoir inside each one of us is love which sadly is unopened and unshared. We are miserly to share love and thereby miss the boat to a fulfilling and enriching life.

Yes, love left on the shelf inside of ourselves tends to dampen our life, and we live it as a wet squib then too. We need to connect to love, and to blazen our life attached to the originating fire of love, or to God too.

@Shiva49 Yes, carrying a unburned log of love around with us, will tend to burden us with its weight, and life-stress too. We need to burn our log of love, and plant our soul's seed in the soils of God's love too, to grow and to love fully in our lives here.

@innertalks We are lugging around God-given love. It is then more of a burden than the key to higher consciousness.

It's always self-reflection and the nature of our perception that brings meaning to life.

Yes, we can see what we see, when we are ready to see what we can see. Self-reflection helps this seeing process to grow in us, as a greater awareness, and understanding of life, and the greater life behind life too.
