English is not my native language so I don´t use it. But in English movies I have seen it being used a disrespecting.

Whatever is a word just like all words and they can be used inter changably depending on the context you want to use in. Not all people think before they talk because certain words just come out. It doesn't mean it's overused unless you use it all of the time which not everyone does. It doesn't mean someone isn't serious about something. Some people just need time to think over what is being talked about.
I do not use whatever that often usually when I do it's because the other person is being annoying and won't let things go or move on so then it becomes whatever.

@ogbenishyna exactly it's all about delivery and how you say it. I tell this to everyone because sometimes how you phrase something isn't how you mean it to sound.

I do use the word but not recklessly. It's a word that has to be used where it needs to be used. It would be disrespectful if it is used with that context and intention.

Yes, sometimes, but that depends on the context. Like when the point in the context need no elaboration or when I'm giving my opinions or views. 'Whatever' in discussions can be harsh if one is not in sync with your feelings in the course of a discussion/argument and is deliberately being disrespectful.

@ogbenishyna Actually, it all depends on the context and one's personal take on one's experience. Cannot be generalised.

I never use that word. It's been many many years since I last used it. I don't think it is disrespectful to use it.

When somebody says that to me I take it as an insult because I think it is their way of letting me know they are not interested in whatever it is that I am saying.

No. I hear a lot of younger people have suddenly started using the word to be dismissive - I find that rude.
