Saving the Grease

When I cook, I don't necessarily have a preference for what oil I use. Most of the time I use just regular old vegetable oil since it tends to be cheapest. But I will also use peanut oil, olive oil, or canola oil. Occasionally I will use butter such as when I make scrambled eggs or Spanish rice. But one of my favorite things to use is bacon grease. It works well and always adds a little extra flavor touch to whatever dish I make. And of course, it's from bacon. And how on Earth could anyone go wrong with anything to do with bacon, right? It's one of those things I use that I don't always have around. I only cook bacon about twice a year. But when I do, I always save the grease, pour it into a jar and refrigerate it. Lately I have been using a Gotham Steel pan to cook my bacon, and it works great. Not only does it separate more grease from the bacon and cook it up nice and crispy, just the way I like it, but I tend to yield more grease and it's cleaner. Do you like to cook with bacon grease?

I don't cook Bacon but husband does & yes he saves it for the dogs to pour over their dry dog food as a treat when we go to fill their feeders up, so while I'm filling their feeders their eating their treat. It keeps them busy & out from under my feet where they don't trip me while I'm in their pens working, we don't do a lot of grease in our foods, it's bad for the older generation & arteries & our health.

That's a good use of it too, and I am sure it's a special treat for the fur babies. I wonder if the cats might like that from time to time? I am sure they would.

I've used it, but not anymore. I no longer eat bacon. I use either butter or olive oil.

@porwest Yes, it is good and so not on my diet plan. I did eat some today. I had a BLT at the ADRC when I went to do rock painting.

@just4him Oh man, do you know how long it has been since I have had a BLT? It's been ages. I need to put this on the dinner list. Yes. Absolutely.

If there is bacon grease left in the pan, I always fry bread (soaked in milk) in it. Delicious.

@porwest It seems the most delicious foods aren't particularly healthy.

Why do you only cook bacon twice a year? I use only grapeseed oil to cook stuff. It’s good for you and doesn’t have an intense flavor so it doesn’t ruin the taste of what I’m making.

It's just way too expensive. I only buy it when there's a major price break. The other day, for example, they had packages on sale at Schnuck's for $2.79 each. I bought two and stuck them in the freezer. They will last me a while.

I'm sure your arteries appreciate you every time you use that bacon grease. Just kidding. Don't blame you buying the cheaper oils. Have you seen the price of Olive Oil.

Hey, you only live once, you know. lol. Olive oil is atrocious lately. I have a bit left, but not much, and I am horrified I might have to replace it. Yeesh.

I rarely cook bacon but when I did I always saved the grease. My grandmother and my mom always had a jar in the refrigerator.

Not generally because it's a bit salty. Usually soak a bit of bread in it and give it to the chickens as a treat!

If I am cooking meat, a little extra salt doesn't hurt. At least, not to my mind.

I don’t use it. Typically I use extra virgin olive oil but I do also sometimes use coconut oil, butter, or vegetable oil.

The only time I eat bacon is when we are on a trip. There are a lot of things I haven't had in a long time; but I would need someone to cook them for me. I'm sure the bacon grease makes everything tasty. My in-laws used to save bacon grease and cook with it. Have a great day.

I've never used bacon grease. Sounds like a good idea. I usually cook with olive oil.

Normally the mainstay is vegetable oil. But if I have bacon grease handy...yummy.
