Homemade Hamburger Helper Was Yummy

When it comes to dinners, I will take the occasional shortcut. But not when it comes to Hamburger Helper. Simply because, quite frankly, it is so easy to copycat, I just won't. So, that's what I made last night. I browned some ground beef and drained off the excess grease and removed it from the heat. Then I added in a tablespoon of ketchup, a teaspoon of spicy brown mustard, a teaspoon of garlic powder, a teaspoon of onion powder, a half teaspoon of seasoned salt, a half teaspoon of pepper, 1 1/2 cups of uncooked macaroni noodles, 3 cups of broth and 1 cup of water. I brought the mixture to a boil and stirred it well, and let that cook for about 12 minutes or so just to soften the noodles. Then it was in with about a half a cup of sour cream and about 4 ounces of shredded cheese. Mixed it all together and let it cook for just a little bit more when it was all done and thickened and served it. It was AWESOME. What went on your dinner table last night?

It sounds delicious! And it's better for you than the box. I made a pot roast yesterday.

@porwest I had my neighbors over for dinner yesterday. There were a lot of mmmm sounds going on. All I have left are the vegetables. I also made apple crisp for dessert and they brought the ice cream.

Way better than the box, hands down. As for pot roast, all I can say is mmmm.

I had a grilled chicken that I bought at a nearby restaurant. It was a good dinner.

Your hamburger helper concoction sounds really good. Browned beef is one of my favorite go to dishes when I want a one dish type of meal. Last night we had sausage with penne pasta and vodka sauce.

@porwest I get the vodka sauce in Shoprite and it's really good. I've never attempted to make my own.

@Marilynda1225 I think if I try it, I will probably try it from scratch at first. I am curious. It sounds good.

I have heard of this vodka sauce more than once around here. I have to give it a go one of these days. It sounds good.

OK you're going to have to explain to me what exactly hamburger helper is. Where does the hamburger come into it? And what is it that needs helping?

@porwest It doesn't sound very nice to me. So the 'hamburger' part refers to the minced beef?

Hamburger Helper is just a brand of "quick meal prep" things. It's basically a box of noodles with a dry sauce packet you add to the water after you've browned your beef and add in all the contents of the box. The stuff in the stores is horrible, in my opinion. So making it from scratch is always much better.

@Fleura Indeed. Yep, the "hamburger" is just cooked ground beef. It actually tastes very good if you make it from scratch. From the box it's really salty and I don't prefer it.

Always better than any box I have ever made, and part of the reason I have not used a box in decades.
