I walked out of the movies

The photo has nothing to do with the text. It's another stone bridge we saw in our European travels. We live in a retirement village and go to movies in the clubhouse once a week. Only ten or a dozen people turn up but that’s okay. We all go a bit early and have a chat and a drink before the movie starts. We’ve always said we don’t mind what we watch and we like to support the guy who runs it each week. However, I had to walk out of last night’s movie which was The Thin Red Line, depicting US troops fighting the Japanese in Papua New Guinea. Three others did too. I think it should have been called ‘100 different ways to die’. Men getting shot and blown apart isn’t really my idea of entertainment, especially when the graphics are so realistic. The acting was very good showing the sheer terror of some of the young men. And the action was just as graphic. Much too realistic for me to get any pleasure from it at all. I would normally be too embarrassed to walk out of a movie but I've decided I'm too old to watch movies I don't want to watch. This is just me of course. I know such a film wouldn’t worry some and that’s fine. We’re all different and rightly so.

I don’t blame you! Old movies got the message across — usually better — without graphic violence.

I really think sometimes you can say a lot more by showing a lot less. It really turned me off. There was no finesse about it at all.

@TheHorse — absolute truth. There’s very little gore in The Birds and that move scared the fecal material out of me!

@JudyEv Hitchcock knew how to terrorize us without gratuitous dismembering.

I would have done the same. American movies are far too graphic when it comes to violence which is why I stick with those star trek types of science fiction, usually there isn't much blood or gore in them.

You're correct, they've been making more realistic films which is not as entertaining as allowing me to form my own images which can be even scarier than the gross bloody stuff they put in their films.

They seem to have worse over the years. I guess the technology has improved too and the action looks much more 'real'.

@rebelann As Mike says, people get desensitised so the film-makers go for more and more violent.

I think I could easily live in France or Ireland but of course I've only been there in good weather - mostly.

It was awful. Young men all getting blown up and so frightened - much too realistic for my taste.

I get it, you shouldn't have to finish a movie if it's not your thing. That kind of film is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

@jstory07 He was responsible for running the show that night as the usual person was on a cruise. So he had to stay there for the duration. He has said he won't go to any more war films.

This bridge looks like an old Roman aqueduct, lovely place. This is not a movie I would like to watch, I would have done the same you did.

@JudyEv The ancient Romans built aqueducts everywhere they went around Europe. Looking at the trees, I think that this one should be in France, may be in the Lyon area.

I'll take more notice next time of what's on offer. It's good of people to put these on so I don't want to make a habit of walking out. But this was just too much to handle.

We've always just gone and watched whatever is on offer but we'll be more careful in future. Vince felt the same but that night he was responsible for running the film then shutting up the place after so he couldn't very well leave.

I think that maybe film makers are getting a bit more graphic in their portrayal of violence because people are getting a bit desensitised so it takes more to "shock" them. I was just thinking the other day, after being asked why I didn't go to the works Christmas do on Monday, I'm getting too old to say yes to things I don't actually want to say yes to At 47 I'm the oldest person at my workplace...the big boss is around my age but everyone else is from 16-25...the majority are teenagers. I know what happens when they go out so I said I'm not going

I can understand the Christmas party bit. My friend can't understand why her sons' idea of a good time is to go out and get drunk as quickly as possible. Huh? I think you're right about films needing to go that bit further to create an impact. I remember when films had wagon trains moving against a scenic backdrop. But then - I'm a bit older than you. lol
