I think we got screwed

Last Thanksgiving, my mom and I went to an AT&T store to upgrade our phones. My mom told the guy that she wanted the best deal for our family plan; that is one with the lowest monthly payment. Instead of just an upgrade, I think the guy actually had us sign up for a new service. He gave us iPhone 14s and didn’t even offer the later models. He had my mom sign up for AARP to get $10 off the bill. He also said that if my mom signs up for automatic debit for monthly payments she will save as well, so that’s what she did. He also told us that we should get a third line to save even more money. We don’t really have to use it. That is what we ended up doing. However, now that I think about it, how the hell are we saving money when we have to pay for the third line? Oh, and he signed us for AT&T next (or something like that) which allows for an early upgrade. Of course, that’s a monthly fee and it’s per line. We don’t need that. And instead of saving us money we are throwing it away. Thankfully, I noticed that after only a few months of the new service and was able to get rid of that by chatting with support online, which lowered the bill. It is now around $208. Before that it was around $221, though first bill was $247. My mom is thinking of getting rid of the third line but there is a problem. For whatever reason the guy put the installments for my mom’s new phone under the third line and not under hers. I don’t think we can get rid of that line if the monthly installments for the phone are on it.

I would get rid of that 3rd line. A customer service rep should be able to switch the installments to another line. It sounds like that salesperson added as many things as he could. Have a good week.

We will try doing that. She doesn’t want to go to the AT&T store so she will need to call them and then say that I will talk to them to explain the situation.

@lovebuglena Good luck! Don't let them talk you into anything.

It seems that the guy added a lot of things you did not need in order to get a better commission.

@lovebuglena Too many salesperson push more things that needed to get a higher commission. What he proposed makes no sense at all.

Could be. No need to waste money every month just so we can potentially do an early upgrade. We can wait. And I still don’t get why he put the installments for my mom’s phone on the new line and not under her line. Makes no sense to me.

Wow, that’s an awful lot. It does sound like he took advantage of you guys, and I hope you can figure out how to get the price down. My iPhone 11 was $200, and we paid it up front so payments wouldn’t be a factor.

It seems we are getting a discount because we did direct debit for our monthly payments. And I have to double check on that but I think we are getting a discount because my mom signed up for aarp. We should be getting it. Our iPhones with the promo were in the $700 range.

I have three lines on my plan, with unlimited data and yearly upgrades. And my bill is only $148. I have Verizon.

@TheHorse not sure if finance was the correct word. My mom pays the phone off in monthly payments rather in one shot. And I’m not even sure AT&T lets you pay for the phone in one shot. At least I’ve never heard them offer it.

Do you finance your phones? That would make the bill higher.

That guy seemed like a nice guy. But I guess that doesn’t mean that a nice person won’t screw you over or rip you off.

It all sounds terribly complicated to me. Would it be possible for you both to just cancel the upgrades you have now and start from scratch?

We got new phones and are paying for them in monthly installments. Don’t think you can cancel the service until you pay off the phones.

It is. At one point in the beginning of our new service when someone called my mom’s number the calls went to the new line instead. And no one could figure out why. It doesn’t happen anymore thankfully.
