Do you have skills that you do not normally brag about?

I know that I can be a bit "cocky." I was a good softball player. And I am a passable musician. But I possess a skill that I don't often brag about. Do you have certain skills that you don't often brag abut? This is your chance to join me in "cockiness"! We are trained to be humble. To bow like a reed. But there are times to "toot our horns." We ALL developed certain skills out of necessity. It is time for you to toot your horn with me. And I mean up to the stars! As a child who grew up partially in Montana. I was often called upon to stomp aluminum beer cans. Said beer cans would be put into large green bags and tossed into dumpsters or "recycled." I am not sure what "recycling" is, but I hear it is a good thing. Over the years, I became skilled at stomping beer cans into small disks that could fit into large green bags efficiently. I still practice this skill. Do you have skills that you have nurtured over the years but not spoken a lot about? Your humility is admirable. But this is your time to "crow."

I am good at coming with solutions to problems, particularly if it involves making something for which we don't have the usually-used materials/tools/etc.

I have discovered that I find out that I HAD skills after I lose them. I discovered that I was goodlooking when I was young. But I could not brag about it because the discovery was made when I got old. The same thing happened with academic skills and multitasking. I even had a good penmaship (lost now because of my shaking hands). The list is long. But I still do brag about my ability to make lists. I have to do that now, else I would even forget my name.

I may also have been decent looking when I was young. But I did not realize it because of circumstances I will not discuss right now. I KNEW I was decent at math.

@TheHorse I was always at the top of my class. But I always thought that it was because my parents were bright and we always had books around us.

I am good at planning special holiday crafts with young children. I used to make animals out of shapes. I can make some things out of wood just by helping my first husband who build houses. I made all of my kids a bookcase and a foot stool. I made a printer stand when we moved here since I could not find one. Everything looks good when I am done I just figure it all out in my head.

same as Judy, I am a good problem solver and I am very good in searching the Web. Every time my husband does not arrive to find the right phrase to find something I DO!

I'm good with accounting and detail work. I was also good at needlepoint and embroidering. Other than that, I can't think of anything else. Have a good week. Oh, yes. I was a pretty good cook.

@TheHorse In general, I find Americans have more sets of skills than we Indians. Every third or fourth American seems to be capable of strumming a guitar. Correct me if I am wrong. If not guitar, it could be piano or drums. Then needlework....and cooking... It maybe because you all have the required equipment. Guitars are freely available unlike out here. Needlepoint...we will have to search for shops where we can find things that we need. Headache.

I consider myself to be a good cook. I am not a chef by any means, however. I love cooking, especially if I can learn to cook some other ethnic food group than just the typical American foods. I was married to a man from India and I learned how to cook Indian foods. It is one of my most favorite kinds of food. Right now, I have no real nice space for doing any real good cooking. I also love baking, especially cookies, cakes, and brownies. I make cookies from scratch, but I use the box mixes for the cakes and brownies. Sometimes I make pies and cobblers from scratch too, My aunt had a wonderful pie crust recipe. Always flaky.

@TheHorse It took me several years and lots of trial and error to get it right. It would never measure up to the best of Indian cooks though.

I think some of my skills in guiding others, mentoring and multi task in a few domains was something I didn't talk in years. Yet since the last few years, I had to brag about a few due to certain circumstances. There are some new skills that I am developing and perhaps one day I might club them in the same category.

@vandana7 And I think my talent in Machine washing clothes almost everyday, drying and then setting them is underrated. Yet I think it's not good to brag too much for them.

The only skill I am slowly mastering is communication with my cats. Pretty much I can understand what they want, when the want me to follow them, and I can read what they are thinking from just looking at their expressions,

Even though I am an introvert I am very good at public speaking. When I was in school I always won any public speaking contests we had. I have given a few eulogies and many wedding and anniversary speeches. It always surprises people because for the most part I am quiet and shy and very awkward in social situation. I even amaze myself because I will get anxious right up until the moment but then I just settle in with it and everything flows.

I guess my skill I don't crow about is sewing, and using that skill to make teddy bears. I have made them for over 30 years and have them in homes and museums around the world. I also recycle fur into many of the bears. I collect mink and faux furs for this purpose and will donate the bears for fund raisers at various charitable organizations. If you were ever so lucky, I saw a show on the Dish when I lived out in the woods, about the recycling. They showed aluminum cans being recycled and it was fascinating. They are first loaded into bins, then they are dumped on conveyors and go into shredders. They then come out looking like Easter grass and head for the pots to be heated and melted down so they can be remade into cans. It could very well be that the beverages that you are drinking are in an aluminum cans that have been sterilized and recycled thousands of times. In my case, with the mink furs, faux fur coats, and even fancy lace dresses, I strip them down and take them apart so that they are flat. I will then decide the bear pattern I will use and cut out the bear. In the case of the real furs being recycled, I will glue a lining on the back of the fur to stabilize the leather section of the fur. Contrary to popular belief, the leather of a fur coat (or stole) isn't that thick for weight sake. For the stitches of a bear to hold I HAVE to line the back with the mixture of 50% white glue mixed with 50% water and a cotton based fabric. It has to dry for several days (depending on the time of year. I usually do the recycling of fur for bears in the late spring through summer when it's hot and drier in my area). Then I can sew the bears and do the finishing. While people protest the use of real fur, I haven't been protested for my recycling the furs into bears, and have been applauded for my efforts and my donations to the various humane societies and fur saving organizations. I'm working on two mink bears right now (My neighbor is drooling over them every time she comes in) and I'll post their pictures when they're done.
