Yesterday it was in the 60s, and today it’s back to the heavy sweatshirt. The weather is paying tribute to Tommy Smothers with all this yo-yo temperature change. While my knees take an arthritic beating from the cool, damp weather I’ll present to you another song with “live” in the title. Linda? NO!!!!!!! #5: Wonder Could I Live There Anymore - Charley Pride We had the 45 of this, and I liked the B-side (“Pirogue Joe”) better. That speaks a lot about “Pirogue Joe,” because this is one great song! You can’t go home again. Thomas Wolfe had a book by that title. That’s what this song is about…and about 742 1/2 pages shorter than Wolfe’s novel. It juxtaposes the good (“something ‘bout the smell of cornbread cooking on a wood stove”) and the bad (“she’s fixin’ Daddy’s supper, he’s workin’ overtime, tryin’ to pay our bill at the grocery store”), leading to the conclusion that “I don’t really miss them like before.” Charley Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi (I was there during my recent vacation), in the heart of the Delta where escape from the “hard-work day” is a dream too often unfulfilled. Pride accomplished it, going from the Negro Leagues baseball to worldwide success and the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was extremely popular in country music in the US in the 70s. He was known outside of country music because he was black, and not many blacks were interested in performing country music.

I guess you had to grow up with this. If you hear anything by him anymore it’s “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’.”
