I am back in India from abroad after a stay in Kazakhstan and the UAE. Getting home is always a pleasure, and I thought it best to go with my friend, I will not say who to the United Services Club. This is the Premier club of Western India and credit for it goes to the British during the days of the Raj. In those days, there were very few Indians who were officers in the army and hence this Club was a white man's preserve. Times have changed now and other than the odd retired Britisher you don't see any of them here. The club is situated on prime land in the city of Mumbai and overlooks the sea. It is a beautiful place and one can get a feeling that you are in Honolulu. On a hot sunny day with the sea wind blowing, the best thing is to have jug off drought beer. Accordingly, I ordered one jug of Kingfisher and you can see me drinking it. This is just to give you an insight that India is not an obscure place. and things are moving forward. The Club is among the elite in India but membership is confined to officers of the defence forces. There was also a lovely buffet spread with the number of non-vegetarian dishes and overall it turns out to be a wonderful day sitting with the sea behind. Sipping the beer can be a elevating experience. It also fertilizes the mind and I could plan my next novel sitting in such a salubrious place.
