Electrolytes and Water

It is getting warm outside. It's 68 degrees outside right now at 5p. We need to be drinking a lot of water. At least 8 glasses per day. I know. Some people hate the taste of water. My grandson is one of those. He has many of the symptoms of dehydration way too often. Like weakness, headaches, dizziness, less frequent urination, irritability, or a lack of energy or enthusiasm. Children will be playing outside and dehydration for them can be very serious. In children they can have sunken eyes and cheeks, no tears when crying, no wet diaper for three hours, dry mouth and tongue, and the spot on the top of the skull can be sunken. Scary when it comes to little kids. I used to drink a lot of Gatorade in the summertime. It has electrolytes in it and helps us feel hydrated this time of the year. Electrolytes do a lot for us and we need an adequate amount in our diet to keep our bodies working right. They affect everything from the heartbeat to muscle contractions. We all are more active this time of year and need our bodies working in tip-top shape for walking and playing games outside. I have started getting packets of powder that you pour in your water. They are tasty and give us the electrolytes and nutrients we need like calcium and zinc. There are some brands that are very expensive but I found some that aren't. I think it is important to find ways to get more water down to those we love. The picture is from wallpapertag.com

I started drinking sparkling water last week. No calories and I drink about 3 to 4 glasses of water each day. Before this I barely drank water but did drink cocoa.

@sallypup .......Have you tried electrolyte packets? You just put the powder in water. They have several different flavors and I get 10 packets for $3. Electrolytes are good for us.

There is sodium added to Gatorade and it's bad for the kidneys. I only drink sparkling water.

@LadyDuck .......It costs $2.74 here for a 11-ounce bottle. I get it occasionally for a treat. More often I get the electrolyte packets for 10 packets for $3.

I agree we need water to keep us hydrated, but not everyone needs eight glasses a day. Too much water can kill you. My doctor told me I flushed all the sodium from my system once when I had too much water and told me how much was enough for me. He told me if I continued drinking water at the rate I was, I would die. Let your doctor tell you how much you need. It's good you know the signs of dehydration and know your grandson needs more water. I'm glad you found a way to make it taste good.

Men and women need different amounts too. I go by how I feel. I know my body well enough to know if I am dehydrated or not. I probably drink 45 ounces each day and I am fine. But there is tea too. I don't see a doctor often so I go by what my body is telling me.

I never drink enough water. My kidney function tests are always bad. Since I've been sick I've been drinking more fluids. Have a good week.

I'll be the first to admit, I don't drink water. Nor would I try to cram that much in one day. The ammount a person needs varies. It depends on what you're doing, and how you feel.
