The mascot for the U.S. Forest Service, Smokey the Bear, was popular from 1950 and 1976. He drew millions of visitors annually at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. He received more than 13,000 pieces of fan mail each week. This required three people to answer it all. It also earned him his own zip code 20252. The Chicago World's Fair in 1893, often hailed as "the fair that changed America," unveiled iconic innovations to the American public, including the Ferris Wheel, Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum, Aunt Jemima pancake mix, and Cracker Jacks. It was at this event that brothers Frederick and Louis Rueckheim operated a booth selling a sugary, sweet blend of popcorn and peanuts covered in molasses. Visitors loved the treat so much that a few years later, in 1896, the Rueckheim brothers began selling their creation under the name "Cracker Jack." By the 1920s, it was one of the most beloved and best-selling treats in the country. The Chicago's World Fair of 1893 was the one in which H.H. Holmes was bringing women back to his Murder Castle and murdering them.

I never hard about the Chicago's World Fair. This side of the ocean, Paris World Fair or 1889 is the most famous, because the Eiffel Tower was built especially for the exposition and it was the tallest structure in the world at the time.

Yes, the Eiffel Tower was quite a production number back then. I'd love to see it. So cool that it was the tallest building then too.

@celticeagle I have seen the Eiffel Tower many times when we lived in the south of France and went to Paris. Well, I have never been so much impressed by it.

Very interesting. I didn't realize that H. H. Holmes got his victims from the Fair. When we visited the west coast I bought a Smokey the Bear stuffed animal. He's one of my favorites. Have a good day.

Yes, Holmes had thousands to choose from during the fair. Smokey was a neat idea.
