I've been doing hours of Sheltered English Instruction training which is basically strategies for how to help multilingual learners who have limited English learn the language as well as the content. Our ML population in the district has EXPLODED in the past several years. I have 2 students in my classes this year that I basically cannot communicate with without the assistance of an electronic pocket translator. Several others have limited English proficiency. Our district by law should have a bilingual program but it was granted a waiver ($$$) to not do that but provide this type of training for teachers. It is 12.5 hours of after-work training and honestly the only reason I signed up for it was because they are going to pay me $450 for attending. That being said the presenters are excellent, I'm learning a lot, and I would recommend it to other coworkers if/when they offer it again. Anyway today they showed us this 10 minute video about a Spanish-speaking student who has a good work ethic, supportive family, and intelligence. It shows a school day in his life. It really hit all of the attendees of the training hard. We spent like 30 minutes discussing our thoughts and concerns. If you have an extra 10 minutes I recommend watching it. There are so many Americans these days who are anti-immigrant and who think that the people are criminals, lazy, evil, etc. This might change some minds.

Locally, we have a huge pork processing plant and we have Kraft, who is a huge employer. They have both stated publicly that they could not function without the immigrant community. They pay well, but the work is very hard. But those workers show up and are glad for their jobs.

I know that the Mexican immigrants are mostly hard working and send money to their families each week. Not all are bad.
