Marijuana will be reclassified as a Schedule III drug

The news is making this out to be some huge change but it really isn't going to change much of anything for the average American as far as I can tell. "Scheduling" drugs is classifying them based on their potential for abuse, if there is acceptable medical use, etc. Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I drug which means extreme potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. Other drugs in that category include heroin, ecstasy, and LSD. Obviously marijuana does not belong in that category as it isn't nearly as addictive as heroin and it *does* have a medical use. Moving it to Schedule III makes more sense obviously but how will it change life for those who use pot? Not a whole heck of a lot. It would allow for medical marijuana (but not recreational) in states that currently don't allow it. It would allow for medical research to occur. It could change tax and regulation laws. But for the average American things will pretty much remain the same. In any case it won't affect my life. I'm not into pot. I've tried it a few times but it just isn't my jam. There actually is a new dispensary just 1 town over that I drive by sometimes. I keep thinking I'll stop in to see what they have but that hasn't happened in the past year. Both medical and recreational marijuana is legal in NJ.

I think it might affect a lot of people as more research is done on the medical uses. I’ve never smoked it, but if I get chronic pain later in life and they offer me a “pot pill” I wouldn’t object.

@NJChicaa — she’s probably of the Reefer Madness generation who think that pot is the “highway to hell.”

@FourWalls nope. She was a stoner back in her high school days. My dad said that she rolled the best joints.

Thank you for the explanation of the new classification. It's not my jam either. Have a good day.

I live in Mississippi and went to a store yesterday, and to surprise in lit up green lights in capitol letters in the window were THC, and we are the last for anything.
