Today is my "kid day" at Guitar Center. How is your Wednesday shaping up?

I don't use Facebook much, but I had an interesting Facebook discussion with a favorite local musician yesterday. We were discussing the balance between "teaching students to read notes" and "teaching students to create their own music." Today is the day I teach more kids than adults. Of course, this means kids lying on the piano bench, kids hiding under the piano bench, kids wanting to play chords that don't exist, etc. Hopefully I can find the balance between silly fun and teaching music. I will attach a song by the guy I was chatting with yesterday. What I find interesting about the song is that they dabble in notes that sound "Indian" or "Middle Eastern" to me. I am thinking of doing a Hindi song with my American mates. If you are from India, or other non-American places, what do you think of this song? If you don't listen, how is your Wednesday shaping up?

Ah, the joys of teaching music to kids! It's like herding cats sometimes, isn't it? Piano benches doubling as nap spots and imaginary chords being played left and right. But hey, that's all part of the fun, right? Finding that delicate balance between silliness and musical education can be a real challenge.

@zainkhan121 Cool. Have you run into the pretty music that @Vandana7 has been posting lately? I may try to tackle some if it with my "Western" ears.

Interesting music. I know you love every moment of teaching the kiddos. Wednesday was good for me. I got to see my husband. Just got a call. He has to be out by tomorrow. Back to filing an appeal. Have a good day.

@LindaOHio I hope you win the appeal. There should be so much stress involved in getting basic services.

@TheHorse We will keep him there and pay out-of-pocket until he can come home. Hopefully we will win the appeal.

It felt like it could have been part of an Aladdin soundtrack at some point, but it also sounded quite European, like ancient or medieval but Western somehow. I know there are specific scales that make a song sound more exotic, no matter the instrument you use, but whatever they did there felt very mild to my ears. I still enjoyed it though. And yes, I think it'd be a great idea to work on world music projects too. What do you mean kids want to play chords that don't exist? Isn't that jazz?

Heh. I tell the kids that. "Well, it's kind of jazz, but if you just squish ten notes down at the same time, it might just be noise."

@TheHorse You gotta tie a hand behind their back so only five notes can be squished.

@sabtraversa Heh. I'd be working for McDonalds, or for Donald Trump, if I did that.

Wednesday seemed to go by fast while I was writing online. It was a lovely sunny day and I could feel the temps warming up and heavy humidity in the air.
