Back in the Olden Days, when I was about 10 years old living with my Grandmother, I had the scare of my young life that has stayed with me for 60 years. My Grandmother's house was old but in good shape...it had a dirt basement that you could walk through standing up. It was damp most of the time. Thus there were Waterbugs as big as a Palmetto Bug living in the basement. Sometimes when there hadn't been any rain in a while, those Waterbugs would come up into the kitchen looking for water at night. I learned to reach around from the door and turn on the light before I went in the kitchen. My grandmother rented out rooms upstairs. There were 3 bedrooms, A general traffic area, a bathroom, and kitchen. When no one was renting a room, And it was hot, she would put up twin beds in the General Area upstairs where she would open all the windows, and use a fan...No AC back then. One night we were sleeping there, and something woke me up. I felt something on me, and I caught one of those Waterbugs in my hand..Slung it Screaming. Mema turned on the light..I pulled the covers back, and there was another one in my bed. I went and got bug spray and sprayed all the legs, headboard, footboard..etc. Never had another problem. But even typing this I could feel that bug in my hand, and felt Creepy Crawly. That is how I feel anytime I see a palmetto bug down here in FL. If there isn't any other way of killing one...I will stomp on the Palmetto bug IF I have shoes on, but not with my house slippers. LOL I keep a fly swatter where I can find it quickly IF I see one. They sure are sneaky little boogers. I remember one night at my Mema's house, my friend was spending the night and we snuck down to the kitchen..she was ahead of me, and before I could say anything she was IN the kitchen...I reached in and turned on the light. She was standing in the middle of the kitchen, and there were like 4 of those waterbugs scattering around her trying to hide, and she was standing there Screaming and stomping her feet...couldn't help but laugh...and even with all the screaming my Mema never woke up. LOL I still talk to her atleast once a week now, and remind her ever so often of that night. LOL

I live in Florida, and those palmetto bugs are horrendous. I would freak out if I found one inside my house. Many, many years ago, when I was living in an apartment, I never had any problems with bugs. But my neighbors, who were apparently slobs, moved out, and one night I woke up in the middle of the night because I heard something fly by my head. A FLYING noise! I turned on the light and there were 3 of those giant palmetto bugs in my bedroom. They must have somehow climbed through the walls to escape the neighbors when they were packing up everything to move out. I'm sure everyone in the building heard me screaming like a little girl that night.

I hate those things too. When I lived in the Zephyr Hills area, they were everywhere. When it gets hot enough, they start flying.

@akalinus I see one fly in this house...I will start packing up to leave! Haven't seen one fly in here in 18 years, but we DO keep it chilly in here. LOL

You can't really live in Florida and not see a Palmetto bug in your house..especially if you have Azalea bushes next to your house. They LOVE Azalea bushes and we have bushes in the front and one huge one outside of my office. The only bugs we have ever had other than a Palmetto every once in a while was sugar ants. When we moved in there were hundreds of them. Finally got rid of them with coffee grounds, and using bleach to mop around where they came in. Been here 18 years.

I remember the scurrying noise in a motel we stayed in when the lights were out. That's the only time we ran into them many years ago. I hate bugs. Have a good day.

Yikes. Not sure what a Palmetto bug is, but now I have to look it up. One year when I was a kid we were inundated with crickets. I remember one time being in the family room during this infestation, and there was a little black head with antennae peeking over the top of a picture frame...

Okay, I looked them up. Ugh. I honestly think they used something like that in some apocalyptic movie my parents and I watched once. Those were supposed to be carnivorous.

@xstitcher They don't bite, just evil looking. We have Tree Frogs down here, and right after it quits raining at night, they sing..asking for more rain. Had one right under my window. I got dressed went out side with a flashlight trying to find him..he was driving me NUTS! Had one Pretty Tiny Green frog that would come and sit on a window in front of my cats condo...Him and my cat Sam would sit and stare at each other. LOL But he didn't make noises.

@Ghostlady Yeah, that was in a movie, so hopefully if cockroaches ever become carnivorous I won't be around to see it. We used to have tree frogs where I lived, until they built houses all around us.

We don't have a problem with those here. But it would be a funny sight seeing either of you screaming
