Incarceration

As I was replying to @ladyduck I mentioned I have a son who is incarcerated. It's a very trying time with him. He's 33 years old and suffering from mental illness. He has become infatuated with a young lady and began stalking her. He went to school with this young woman and was always infatuated with her but about 5 years ago the infatuation became dangerous. He went to her house and was screaming through the door to her to come out. She didn't and called the police, and honestly I would have done the same thing in her shoes. This happened right before covid hit. He was jailed for 4 months and released but still needed to go to court. Because of covid he didn't get a court day until about 2 years ago. Then they gave him the run around, going to court every single month. He eventually pleaded guilty and given a 5 year sentence but on probation. The probation began in January of this year. He wasn't doing what he was told he would have to do in order to stay on probation and was arrested last month (which is another story all together). On Tuesday he will go to court to find out if he will go back on probation or if he will have to serve the rest of his time in jail. I'll keep you updated.

While he might be safer behind bars, I don't think he'll get the health help he needs. I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you. It's been a rough journey with him and probably for him.

@marymary621 I know this situation isn't really doing any good for his mental health. I hope you can get him the help he needs.

If your son has a mental illness, can´t you or someone vouch for him?

We can and we have. Our hope is the judge will have him evaluated. But even then there are no laws that he has to stay at the mental health hospital.

I hope the judge realizes that your son needs help and sends him in that direction vs. just jailing him. That would do so much more good in the long run and the big picture of his life.

Mental illness is such an impossible situation. I can’t imagine how scared she must have been, but how scared you are for him.

I am sorry for your son. If he obtains another probation I hope he can follow what the court tells him to do.

Can he get treatment for his mental health issues?

We are hoping but the laws around here aren't great towards mental health. It's really a long, hard battle.

I truly hope that the upcoming court hearing brings some clarity and resolution, whatever that may look like for him and your family. Please know that my thoughts are with you during this challenging time, and I'm here if you need someone to talk to or lean on for support.
