Sorry, but I’m not that unpredictable. You probably knew this song would be here; or, if you didn’t think about it on the list of “sun” songs, you’re not the least bit surprised now that you see it on the list. (It also means that Scarred will be rewarded for his patience tomorrow when we get to the Congregationalist preacher he’s been howling for all month!
) But first, this one.
Sunset Grill - Don Henley
It’s hard to tell where the synthesizers ended and the real horns (the album credits said there were real horns (played by co-writer/guitarist Danny Kortchmar) on the song). That was sort of a drawback then (now, who plays any instrument on a song, it’s all AI!
).
But the vocals are real, and the sentiment is real. The boredom of life for both the narrator (“maybe we’ll leave come springtime, meanwhile, have another beer”) and the people he’s watching (“watch the working girls go back, watch the basket people walk around and mumble”) is real.
Oh, and the Sunset Grill is real, too. It’s a dive of a hamburger joint on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Back in the 80s, it was a favorite hangout of Don Henley’s. It was run by “an old man there from the old world,” Joe Froehlich, for 40 years.
@TheHorse will appreciate the fact that it’s right next to a Guitar Center. Or maybe not: the change of the lyrics is reflected in real life.
Sunset Grill
Written by Don Henley, Danny Kortchmar, and Benmont Tench
Recorded by Don Henley
From Building the Perfect Beast, 1984

He really has. He might have a bad reputation as a person but dang he can sing.

Don’t you just wish all that talent was wrapped in a package that didn’t reek of an outdoor toilet?

@porwest -- quirky and weird, yes. Being a jerk? NO. I know way too many talented people who aren't like that in the least.

@FourWalls That would be nice, but also, probably wishful thinking. I think "art" automatically makes people a bit quirky and weird. Perhaps that's what makes it work.

I can honestly say I've never heard of him or this song. You say Sunny Songs and the first one that popped in my head was My Girl lol then When the Sun Goes Down by Kenny Chesney and Uncle Kracker.

Don Henley is best known as the drummer, primary lead singer, and sole remaining original member of the Eagles.

@FourWalls See I like the Eagles but I've never been one to know everything about a band. That's my husband's job. He knows almost everything about different bands like he made it his mission to know lol

Yes, he was with the Eagles. He's the only original member left touring as "the Eagles" now.

@Ineeddentures -- he couldn't charge as much money for concert tickets that way.

I don't know why they don't call themselves Don Henley's Eagles

I don’t know this song. As a solo artist, Don wasn’t very successful over here. I can only remember The Boys of Summer.
I’m looking forward to the “Top Ten” to see how many of my guesses appear. I’ve 5 in mind that haven’t been mentioned yet, so I’m hoping to have at least a couple in there.

That’s been his biggest solo hit here as well. That’s probably why he also tours as the Eagles instead of “Don Henley and Friends,” because he can charge more for the tickets.
He’ll be 78 next week. Time to retire, because there are persistent rumors that he’s lip syncing at shows.
