Cable modems are used only in a very few places .... DSL etc are faster .. lines like T1 , T3 have 55Mbps data transfer rates compared to the theoretical max of 10 Mbps supported by cable modems ( dont ever expect that from ur operator)
There are newer tech. like OC3 (Optical Carrier) used by ISPs
OC-1 = 51.85 Mbps OC-3 = 155.52 Mbps OC-12 = 622.08 Mbps OC-24 = 1.244 Gbps OC-48 = 2.488 Gbps

I feel WiMAX will have an effect on DSL/CABLE. Due to the fact that you will finally be able to get high speed from any location within the network.
More people are mobile and want high speed internet on the go anywhere they are in the city , etc.
