25 years since 9/11

That is hard to believe. I heard someone on the news describe it as "a quarter of a century ago" and I had to do a double take. That makes it sound so much further away. It was like my 2nd week of teaching ever. I was brand new and alternate route which means that my degree wasn't in education but rather in biology. It was like trial by fire for me because I had never even subbed let alone gone through the whole student teaching process. I had absolutely no clue how to deal with what was happening so I just didn't mention it and kept on teaching. When I was on a break I saw on the TV that planes had hit the towers. I turned it off when the kids came in and didn't turn it on again when it was my lunch. The towers were gone. I was in shock. Even today I tried to explain that to the students but I couldn't do it justice. I showed the students a video today that was about the boats used to get people out of NYC. They seemed interested in it. The JROTC made brief announcements throughout the morning as each event happened. They brought tears to my eyes. The kids didn't understand but after showing them the video they sort of got it.
