Is sea travel safe???

Very similar to the Titanic tragedy,an accident occurred in India,a few moths back.It was never taken up as a major issue, but there was a lot of loss of life,none the same.My friend lost his grandparents to this tragedy. She now has mortal fear of traveling by sea.But on a recent job assignment she has had to move abroad to Fiji. Now she has to travel by ship all the while.So she is considering leaving the job that she really liked. Tell me what you think of traveling by sea.Maybe i can give some guidance and persuade my friend not to leave her job,and more importantly,remove her fear of sea travel.
