When should I apply for a Programming Internship?

Well, since I started high school I've been hearing about internships getting people "in the door" at big companies. The problem is, I'm only a freshman in college in the Computer Science program at the University of Arizona and I don't know if I should wait until I have a little more experience and have taken higher level classes before I look for internships. Does anyone have any advice on this? Also, I have a bit of experience with Java but thats about it for coding.
