How does one become an alcoholic? I am sure there are many reasons and each person has some excuse of there own. The bottom line is that it doesnt really matter why they drink, but because they choose to do so, they dont realize how much they are hurting the ones who love them. I have seen first hand the effect of alcohol and when someone abuses it-the situation can become very bad. Most of the violence against women in shelters has come from alcohol or drug abuse that led to the alcoholic abusing the woman and/or children if there are any involved. My ex-boyfriend told me he drank becasue he felt rejected by my family and I know that isnt so. He was brought up in bars and it was just his ways he couldnt change. Even though he had been in alcohol treatment programs before, and had stayed cleaned for as long as a year, he always gave in and went back to his old ways. And because he chooses to live that kind of life, he also chose to give up the only woman that has ever truly loved him. I am sure he will drink himself to death,he is a self destructive person. I only hope he can find the right path before it is too late.
