Will Citizen Journalism Replace Mainstream Media?

December 5, 2006 10:44am CST
I undertook my first bit of citizen journalism this past week on my blog http://www.gospelrhys.co.uk/2006/12/citizen-journalism-at-its-finest.html, I chose to blog about the storms we'd been having in and around the UK. I had trouble blogging about it because the only thing that was surreal was the power cut, and it was very difficult expressing the surreality about it. Anyway, my question to you is, my efforts aside, do you believe Citizen Journalism has a future? The mainstream media doesn't think so (suprise suprise), as the general consensous seems to be that they are - by and large - biased. I agree with that to a point, but I also believe that the Mainstream Media is biased, it just hides it better. Personally, I believe it does have a future. The only source of news I use is the BBC website (I don't buy a daily newspaper), and Citizen Journalism has a much wider news scape than main stream media. What do you think?

I think citizen journalism is here to stay. If it was just a fad, I think it would be decreasing. In reality, I think it is still growing in popularity. People blog for all kinds of reasons, but the fact is they do it and many are strongly motiivated to do so. The information available on the net is so significant that we really do not need to rely on the nainstream media. I do not belive the mainstream media will be going away. They are the water boy for the liberal Democrat party - these great people doing such an important job.

"Do you believe Citizen Journalism has a future?" Power to the people. Yes there is something there for the Citizen Journalist . . . armed with digital camera or MobilePhone camera. On the spot reportage . . . when it happens, where it happens in your neck of the woods.

Just looked at your article - things must have been bad, even the Chinese Takeaway is in darkness! I think Citizen Journalism is a way to get a truer picture of events than the national newspapers who are, of course, very biased. Just look at the Daily Mail for example. I can see, with the right organisation, C.J. has a bright future.
