Tipping minimum wage earners

My friend and I are having a disagreement on this. We go eat at a place where you order from your car and someone brings the food out to you. I tip them $1 usually, but my friend says they are paid over minumum wage so we shouldn't tip them. I do because they still have to come outside to bring you your food, regardless of the weather. What do you think?

When I order food at a place like this I tip. I don't know what they are paid, I just feel like it is the right thing to do.

I just feel even though they are paid minimum wage or above, they are still going outside in all weather to bring you your food, so I give them something extra. Others say that is their job, and they don't agree with me on tipping.

I was always told never to leave nothing... and if the service was bad, to leave one cent behind, so they know that you just didn't forget to tip. But I donly do that if the service is completely terrible.

At fast food place like Sonic, the employees generally get paid more than the average server in a restraunt. Howeve, they do not get paid that much more so they do rely on tips. At the Sonic where I live they make the minimum wage which is $5.25 or $5.75? I can't remember. Anyways, who can live off of minimum wage? You should always tip the drive up servers.

I agree. I also wouldn't want to go out in all kinds of weather to take someone food, that is a big reason I tip them.

waiters/waitresses rely mainly on tips as a main source of their income. I try to tip fairly well. if the service is good, i usually give 3-5 dollars.

I usually tip 25-30% sometimes more if the service was really good.

it will depends on the service given...if it's really nice and they are very friendly and courteous, i dont mind tipping them a lot. however, i've met with some servers who acted as if i owed them a lot and they are so rude and impatient...i will never tip them at all!

If I am sitting inside a restaurant, I tip based on the service. There have been times when I haven't left a tip at all because we saw our waiter twice, to order and bring the check. He didn't even bring our food. We had to ask someone else for drink refills.

I agree that you should tip them, now my boyfriend disagrees with me and says you should tip them all the time, but I feel they should be tipped on the service and quality of the food if it was terrible then I choose not to tip or I lower the amount of the tip.

Now I do adjust the tip in a restaurant depending on the service, but for this, they are like carhops, they just bring the food out. Now if they are rude, I don't tip them, but otherwise I do.

I think you should always tip. I am a delivery boy myself, and hate it when people do not tip. Especially when I deliver on time and am friendly. The biggest tip I ever received was over 22 dollars and was only for 2 pizzas. People like that make my day and I like it. I believe you should always tip in restaurants or anywhere else where tipping is commomn. It is the right thing to do.

Nobody ever tipped me for doing my job. I work in an office, but regardless of what job I would have had, I would not expect a tip from anyone for doing my job. When I wanted to earn more I risked my money and started trading futures, options, etc... even if I lost in the first months. You have to deliver on time because that means doing your job the right way. In the same manner, I have to finish my projects on time... if I don't, someone else will come and take my job. I'm sorry man, I live in a country where you have to tip everyone in order to get your job in order and you're not done even after you die (someone still has to tip the preist and the diggers for you). I'm just so tired of tips :(

I have to agree with the member above. When I first started working in an office, I was earning a really low salary, no one ever tipped me for just doing my job and I had to work my way up to where I am now. Why should I give up my money to tip someone for doing their job? They're not doing it for free - they are getting paid for it. I worked hard for my money all my life and no one ever gave me anything just for smiling or being polite :)

My opinion is that nobody should be tipped. Think about it: they have minimum wage, they get tips from everyone, they end up with 100$/day only from tips! On the other hand, we are working 9 to 5 in the office, do our bosses tip us for solving an assignment?! I think each job is paid according to it's productivity, no reason to pay more. About the weather: when it rains or it snows, or when we get across a trafic jam I think we still have to go to work, our bosses won't give us a day off or a tip for bad weather. Don't know about you guys, buy I am 100% tip-negative.

Yep I agree you should tip them, every little bit counts for the minimum wage workers. They barely make it as it is.

When my son made minimm wage, he really appreciated when he got tips, he was upset when one time he loaded up 2 sets of weights and 2 weight benches into some guys truck, then tied it all in place for him...in case of sudden stops at the guys request. Then the guy tipped him $1. He really did appreciate when people tipped him, even though he was a kid, I made him responsible for certain expenses - mainly gas, car insurance and his cell bill. You would tip a waiter/waitress..I would think that someone who brings food to your car should be tipped too.

It's not common practice to tip when you go through a drive thru restaurant in the UK and it's mostly McDonalds that we can drive through here anyway - you go to a window with your car, place your order, pay your money, drive to the next window and they give your food. More often than not, they make a mistake, more often than not, they don't bother smiling or saying thank you (bearing in mind that I ALWAYS say thank you to THEM) - I don't tip them - I don't know anyone else who does. But in the UK we tend to tip people in restaurants where they actually serve you at your table and then only if the service warrants it. I know it's popular to just tip everyone in the USA but I guess us Brits are somewhat tighter with our money :)

Depending on what state you live in, even the servers at a sit down restaurant might be making minimum wage. I wouldn't tip the people at fast food restaurants that bring my food to the car, regardless. At a lot of places like that, they aren't even supposed to accept tips.

I tend tip them. I think that they are serving you. They may be paid more than "waitstaff" pay, but my guess is that they still are paid minimum wage. Minimum wage isn't enough to live on, so I do tip. On the subject of minimum wage...it is low, but I really don't support raising it without working on many other issues. It seems that everytime we have a rise in minimum wages, prices also go up. This puts the minimum wage earner right back where they started...yes, they may see a bit more money in their paycheck, but they are having to spend that extra money on necessities which will now cost more.

I agree that they should be tipped. Just because they are paid over minimum wage doesn't mean anything. I hate to say it but your friend sounds kind of snotty. I'm sure she wouldn't like to work for $6.50 an hour working hard making food, and then have to deal with people who think she doesn't deserve a tip. I don't mean to put down your friend, but that kind of attitude really bothers me.

yes, I agree because they do have to serve it to you - and also to come and pick up the tray from the side of your car - if they are providing one. I would probably not feel as compelled to leave a 15% or greater tip though - as I am at a sit down restaurant. the change from a dollar is usually sufficient to me.
