When considering what age I would let my child walk to school by herself I have to look at several factors. How big or small is your town? Do your friends and neighbors keep an eye on the children who travel to and from school? Does your child have to cross any busy streets? How responsible is your child and what is her age? How far is the distance to your school? I live in a small town where everyone knows my child and watches out for her but I still don't let her walk the 6 blocks to school alone. She needs to at least have a few friends who are about 10 years old like her, and are assertive so if something happened they would be able to assist her. To me it is just not worth the risk. There are just too many child predators out there and there is always the possibility of her becoming injured and needing assistance.

I started walking to school on my own (well with a friend) at the age of 11-12, when I hit highschool. Although I actually enjoyed walking with my Mum!
