Not always. A lot of formal branches of science make use of extensive maths and statistics, but you can do science informally as well.
I don't use math in my garden, but figuring out what grows well and what doesn't involves all kinds of experimenting.
You can also play around with numbers for the sake of playing around with numbers without having to relate them to anything in the physical world.
