Harsher punishment for child abuse...?

Recently in my town, a man went to court over killing a 2 month old baby.. he shook it until blood was coming from its nose and mouth, wiped the babys face and layed it down in the crib, and left it for the mother.. this was not the first time the guy had shaken this child, and the mother knew when she left him with her baby.. its predicted he will get about 6yrs and serve about 2... and she will not be punished at all.. Is this fair? Do you think there should be a harsher punishment? what about the babys mother who left her child in harms way knowingly?

That is so sad. There needs to be tougher punishment for anyone that harms a child but saddly that is not the case. These people just get to do what they want and spend no time at all for their crimes.I think if the mother knew then something should be done.
