What are Euro prisons like?

As an American, I hear a lot of horror stories about American prisons, but I'd like to know how it fares against European prisons. Things I'm interested in hearing are it's conditions, the turnover percentage of people who do reform or don't, it's capacity, or anything interesting other members would like to share. This, of course, comes from my burning desire to pull a real life Grand Theft Auto 3 but hmm what country?
