why do they associate the colors red and green for christmas?

I think because these are the basic colors that one can readily get. Aside from this, colors have meanings also. Red means joy and prosperity. Green represents abundance and peace. Its just a representation of the meaning of Christmas. Besides green and red look good together:-) Thats all i know and thats all i can answer.Advance merry Christmas and a happy new year to you.
