I've been writing and recording my own album for the past year or so here and i'm really curious as to what people HONESTLY think about it. Most of the comments i get are from friends, so it's usually sugar coated. Here it is http://www.myspace.com/brookermusic Please take a listen, have a drink, a smoke; something, and then tell me what you think. I'm very interested to hear any and all opinions except the classic "it's cool", that one has been said too much =) Thankyou!

the disclaimer: i didn't have a drink, smoke or anything prior to listening, and while i listen to lots of different types of music, i have ever been a big fan of trip hop and only like a few groups that fall into the ambient or "jam" categories. So even among your target audience, if I like it, it's not necessarily a good sign ;P That said, I found your stuff pretty interesting. "A Simple Question" at first reminded me of Main and some of the other ambient stuff that I like, then moved into a more jammy spacerock sort of thing that had some nice momentum for a while but didn't seem to really go anywhere. Which would have been fine if you cut a minute off of it, but by the end I felt like it was just a little too new-agey. I really liked Inspiration from Vi..., sorta a mellower version of Muslimgauze. I also really liked I Forget - excellent guitar work that I wish would have been a little more raw and energetic, but that's just my own personal taste. Great musicianship and while I would suggest burying the vocals in the mix a bit more, that's also probably due to my penchant for bands like Slint, Rodan, Codeine, Sonic Youth, Seam, Spatula, etc. Lust Obstains Virtu... was a nice little straight ahead indie piece that reminded me a bit of a cross between Sebadoh and the Beatles...until the odd neo-classical second half came in. I dunno - this one just didn't hold together for me, but is probably the one that is the most radio friendly. Lyrics and vocals often ruin songs/bands for me - not that I only listen to instrumental music, but a lot of what I listen to is primarily instrumental. The major exceptions being the hip hop I listen to or stuff where I am totally in love with the lyrics and/or vocals - like the Silver Jews. "All my favorite singers couldn't sing" - David Berman

Thankyou very much for the truly honest and thoughtful words. I don't think anyone else will post anything quite like that. The mix on all of those are still in the working. Those are basically the beginings of what is to come. But again, thankyou for the honesty and your definitely getting a plus. -chris
