Dismissal dispute

December 8, 2006 7:51am CST
This happened in a league match this season. I would like to know your opinion. Ball was bowled and the batsman fends it to gully, where it is fielded. As gully picks it up the batsman leaves his ground and starts gardening. Gully throws the ball at the wicket, hitting it and appeals for a run out. The primary umpire gives it out; the batsman complains saying he was gardening but does start to walk. The square leg umpire then stops him and, after talking to the other umpire, declares the batsman to be not out since he was not going for a run. If you had been the umpire what wuld you have done?
