Are we talking fashion here or musical trends? Because I have noticed a growing trend of "vintage," thrift store-looking clothes at major department stores. "Indie kid" is one my primary qualifications for someone applying for the position of Mr. Right, and it's getting harder to pick them out by looks alone. "Indie fashion" is becoming mainstream, just as much as (probably more than) the music. Just look at Fuse, VH1 and MTV (when they play music) playing videos from Lykke Li, the Decemberists, Adele, Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco (because even with their successes, Vagrant, Fueled by Ramen and DecayDance are still listed as independent). I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, it brings great music to people who wouldn't otherwise go searching for it. On the other hand, it brings great music to people who would otherwise be listening to Rhianna and Taylor Swift (and mostly still are). They don't appreciate it and that's kind of insulting to indie kids like myself who have been proactively seeking out new music since we were 14, 15 years old.

I often say that It's all about fashion, and I think for a lot of people it is. But for some there is more to it than that. Young people are looking for belonging, looking for community. For a lot of folks the underground indempendent music scene is where they find that, or at least think they do. But for so many they just want to be "cool" and so they subscribe to the indie or emo fashion but do not even know the deeper parts of it all. I think people need to start being themselves.
