MP3's? Ipods?

I am not up to dat on new gadgets. My husband and I were over 50 when we got our first computer and went online. Can someone explain to me exactly what an MP3 player is? and what is an ipod? what is the difference and why are they considered so cool?

To me they're the same. They both play music that you dowload to them.
