I punch my father in law....am i wrong??

I punch him in the face, because he slap my wife which is his daughter, but stil, already my wife...so, am i wrong?? my wife tell me that his father when she was a child, like to beat her when she made a mistake..but now, if he hit her, he will have to answer to ME!!Nobody hit my wife, or even slap her in face, so, am i wrong??pls help me, my famiy think i'm wrong..
