My wonderful two-year-old boy cannot be by himself for ANY period of time. For instance if he wakes up and we are not beside his bed, he cries until he makes himself sick. He is fine as long as one of the two of us is with him, but I am beginning to wonder about how to foster independence in him. If we are cooking in the kitchen and send him right outside th door, he is okay as long as he can see us. He much prefers to be playing under our feet though. Suggestions?

He is suffering seperation anxiety. He will eventually grow out of this, but it will take time and work from the both of you. You will have to try to let him not see you for a verry short time, and reassure him that you are nearby (i.e. just around the corner of a wall.). Slowly lengthen the time that he cannot see you. The seperation anxiety will eventually go away. The same thing happens with dogs as well.

He'll let us leave the room long enough to go to the restroom or take contacts out when we tell him that is what we are doing. Guess we need to start lengthening that or finding chores that take longer that he will be accepting of.
