Join the BOINC community boinc.berkeley.edu. Download the software then sign up for projects and put your computer down time to helping find cures for disease, searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, modeling climate change, etc. It will only use as much computer time as you say it can, and you can set it up to run only when you are not using your computer. I run it on all of my computers.
