It has been my experience that there are a higher number of drinkers in the bar and restaurant industry and there are some statistics that back my feelings up. Data from two surveys relating to alcohol consumption in the service industry was evaluated. The study was fueled by previously unsubstantiated conjectures made that hotel and restaurant personnel drink more than other groups in the service industry. Both studies utilized the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). In one survey students were interviewed, in another, service employees were interviewed. The first survey showed that students in hotel management obtained significantly higher AUDIT scores than other groups. The second survey revealed that restaurant workers scored significantly higher than employees in other areas of the service industry. Is it the fact that alcohol is around and simply more convenient or is the job that stressful? Perhaps both. What do you think?
